Wonderland of Learning Virtual Academy began during the pandemic so children could continue learning, feel safe, and stay connected during an uncertain time.
What many families don’t know is why this work is so personal to me.
As a child, I struggled deeply with reading and comprehension. I often felt behind, overwhelmed, and judged.
One of the first books I ever finished completely on my own was Alice in Wonderland. That moment — the “I did it!” — changed everything for me. It gave me confidence and showed me that I could succeed as a learner.
That experience inspired the name Wonderland of Learning. I wanted to create a place where children feel supported, capable, and proud of themselves — and where they can experience that same moment of confidence.
My late father was an English professor and later a college president. He believed deeply that education should be accessible to everyone.
He created programs that helped low-income students earn college degrees when traditional pathways were not available to them.
When I struggled with reading and comprehension as a child, my father taught me with patience, kindness, and love. His belief in education, access, and opportunity is a big part of why I do this work today.
My late husband, Ron, shared this mission with me.
Before he became ill, Ron helped teach classes and dressed as Santa each Christmas for the children. He spent his career serving and protecting young people as a:
Together, we also taught English online to many students in Japan, something Ron was especially proud of because of his Japanese heritage. This mission continues the work we started together.
Over the past five years, Wonderland of Learning has grown far beyond what I ever imagined.
I have taught more than 700 children in 12 countries, including:
United States, Canada, Mexico, England, Pakistan, India, Japan, South Korea, Ukraine, Australia, France, and Chile.
Some children participate through paid programs. Others have received free support through:
To expand our impact even further, I launched the Wonderland Global Literacy & ESL Academy.
This academy focuses on:
